Frequently Asked Questions

If you have any questions about Osteopathy or any of our treatments please do not hesitate to call or email us. Some of the most commonly asked questions are covered below:

Osteopathy itself is not inherently painful. Osteopathic treatment typically involves manual techniques such as stretching, massage, and manipulation of muscles and joints to improve mobility, reduce pain, and promote overall health. While some individuals may experience temporary discomfort or soreness during or after treatment, particularly if they have underlying musculoskeletal issues, the goal of osteopathy is to alleviate pain and improve well-being in the long run. It’s essential to communicate with your osteopath about any discomfort you may experience during treatment so they can adjust their techniques accordingly.

Your osteopath will warn you if they think that the technique that they are about to use is likely to be uncomfortable, and will stop if you tell them that you are feeling too much pain.

Following treatment, about half of patients report some mild soreness in the area of their body that was treated, this can usually be relieved with an over the counter painkiller and will go away within 48 hours. If you experience serious or unusual symptoms after treatment, you should contact your osteopath straight away for advice.

Sessions last around 45 minutes. Typically, your initial appointment is extended slightly to accommodate a comprehensive intake of your medical history.

Yes. If you would prefer to see a female practitioner please ask us when making your initial appointment.

Yes. Please speak to us about your specific policy when arranging your appointment. Many private health insurance policies include provisions for osteopathic treatment coverage. However, it’s important to contact your insurance company beforehand to ensure. We are approved by all major providers so please discuss with us when booking your initial visit.

It may be necessary for the osteopath to ask you to remove some clothing so that they can see and touch the areas of the body causing concern.

If you are uncomfortable undressing into your underwear the osteopath may be able to suggest clothing, such as shorts, leggings and t-shirt, or you can ask the practitioner for a close-fitting garment. This can help enable the practitioner to work effectively without making you feel uncomfortable, so please do discuss this with your osteopath in consultation.

You are welcome to bring someone with you into the examination room if this puts you at ease, and you may wish to see an osteopath of the same sex as yourself, this can be arranged at our Widnes practice only.
